DDT:
DDT was one of the first modern pesticide and is one of the most
well-known. DDT is an organic pesticide and is hydrophobic, or repelled by water. DDT gets it's
name fromm diclhoro-diphenyl-trichloroethane or abbreviated as DDT. It
was developed durin WWII and intiallly used for mosquitoes. Around the time of the war mosquitoes were spreading malaria,
typhus and other insect born diseases that need to be stopped. Paul Hermann Muller won the Nobel Prize for his discovery that
DDT was an efficient poison against many insects.
But DDT had its problems. In 1962 Rachel Carson published her book Silent Springs
which caused much civil unrest and led to the ban of DDT. DDT was found to be only half as oisonous 15 yeras later!
